1. Your driving licence
Visitors can drive in Turkey with their national licence for up to six months from their date of entry. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, carry an International Driving Permit as well. Most rental companies require you to be at least 21 and to have held your licence for two years.
2. Speed limits
For cars: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on two-way intercity roads and 110 km/h on divided highways, unless signs say otherwise. Speed cameras are common on the D400 coastal road.
3. Drink-driving
Turkey has a strict alcohol limit and penalties are heavy. The simplest rule: if you drink, don't drive.
4. Seat belts and children
Seat belts are compulsory in all seats. Children need a suitable child seat – you can add one to your booking.
5. Tolls and HGS
Rental cars carry an HGS toll tag. Around Fethiye the only toll you are likely to meet is the Göcek Tunnel between Dalaman and Fethiye. Tolls used during the rental are charged by the rental company.
6. Fuel
Petrol stations are frequent on main roads and most are attended – an attendant fills the car for you. Check whether your car takes petrol (benzin) or diesel (dizel).
7. Mountain roads
Roads to Faralya, Kabak and Babadağ are narrow and winding. Drive slowly, use a low gear downhill and give way to larger vehicles.
8. Parking
Use marked paid car parks; in summer Ölüdeniz car parks fill up by late morning. Never park on yellow lines or in front of entrances.
9. In case of an accident
Stop, make the area safe and call your rental company first. They will tell you what to do; for accidents with injury call 112.
10. Photos at pick-up
Take photos of all four sides of the car and note the mileage and fuel level. At Emar Rent a Car this is recorded together with you on a signed handover document.
